General Information

Tenerife has many irritations such as “Scratchcard Touts” and Lookey Lookey. The scratchcard touts approaches the tourist to buy scratch cards with the opportunity to wine contracts for time-share apartments. These guys are scammers and the UK’s Office of Fair Trading backs this view. Lookey Lookey will try to sell you sunglasses, watches, jewellery and other cheap stuff known as Lucky Luckies. These guys are also known to sell drugs if approached in a cartain way. A “no gracias” or “no thanks” is enough to get these guys of your back. Don’t be afraid if you see a bouncer in front of a restaurant as they keep these Lookey Lookey’s away.

Currency & Time Zone

Tenerife is part of Spain and therefore its main currency is the Euro (€).

The island is located on the UTC0 time zone. This means it is 2 hours behind of South African time and the same as Greenwich Mean Time. During the summer, the island converts to Daylight Savings Time (DST) and moves to the UTC+1 time zone.

Crime

Tenerife is fairly save but every tourist should be wary of pickpockets. Walking alone at night is not advisable as a large number of illegal immigrants and local youths are known to take advantage of lone night travellers. The local police are very strict and might arrest not just the culprit but also anyone who they suspect is involved. A 24-hour stay in the jail and a fine will not scar you for life. Stay away from sleeping on the beach at night.

Weather

Known as the “Island of Eternal Spring” the island enjoys warm climate year-round. Temperatures average 20˚C – 22˚C in the winter and 26˚C – 28˚C in the summer. The high mountain ranges, such as Teide, experiences snowfall during winter.
