Getting around in Washington is fairly easy because the city has an extensive underground metro train system and a bus system. When traveling by car, be sure to have a good map of the city and allow extra time for finding parking and keep a few coins in you pocket for the parking meter. For this reason it is recommended you wear comfortable flat shoes for walking around the city.
The city of Washington has heightened security measures after the events of September 11, so allow extra time to pass through metal detectors and bag searches. Don’t carry anything that security might confuse with a weapon such a scissors, pocket knives or pepper spray.
Keep a bottle of water with you during the hot summer months, as you can quickly dehydrate while wondering about the city.
